The number of columns and rows per sheet can affect spreadsheet performance. However, the main factor is often the nature of the formulas used and the ranges they need to scan. In particular, formulas that create quadratic behavior, where formulas copied down many rows each scan a large range, can severely impact performance in large datasets.
